Transmission System Operator (TSO) – is an entity entrusted with transporting energy in the form of natural gas or electrical power on a national or regional level, using fixed infrastructure such as transmission lines or windmills.

Historically, TSOs have often been entities owned and run by the public, as they often are natural monopolies. Regulations often apply and many system operators across Europe have been privatised. (Reference missing)
