The current most up to date policy on low emission mobility is A European Strategy for low emission mobility proposed by the European Commission. The Strategy focuses on three main points, a more efficient transport system, increasing the deployment of low-emission alternative energy for transport and transitioning to zero-emission mobility.

Local authorities and cities are vital for implementing these main points successfully. The general focus lies at regional initiatives and incentives to encourage the citizens to transport in a less polluting way. The only global effort initiated by the European Commission in the Strategy is at a global level. The global level approach will regard emissions from international aviation and maritime transport.
