The third energy package of the EU is the latest round of energy market legislation that covers five main areas:
- unbundling energy suppliers from network operators;
- strengthening the independence of regulators;
- establishing the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER);
- cross-border cooperation between transmission system operators and the creation of European Networks for Transmision System Operators (ENTSO-E and ENTSO-G);
- increased transparency in retail markets to benefit consumers.
