Sanctions are restrictive measures such as restrictions on trade, travel restrictions or restrictions in the financial sector that are generally imposed with the aim of bringing a change in policy or activity by a target country. The EU can apply sanctions as an implementer of UN sanctions (implementing), apply sanctions that go beyond UN sanctions (supplementary) or apply sanctions in the absence of UN sanctions (autonomous).
