The '''The third energy package''' of the EU is the latest round of [[Competitiveness#Single_market|energy market legislation ]] that covers five main areas:
* unbundling energy suppliers from network operators;
* strengthening the independence of regulators;
* establishing the [[Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER)]];
* cross-border cooperation between transmission system operators and the creation of European Networks for Transmision System Operators([[ENTSO-E]] and ENTSO-G);
* increased transparency in retail markets to benefit consumers.
