The '''non-governmental organisations''' ('''NGOs''') play a crucial role in protecting human rights world wide. They are especially important when it comes to obtaining information (through surveys, research, etc.), identifying priorities and giving citizens an opportunity to make their voice heard. There is a number of NGO networks that fight for this mission on a European level such as the European confederation for Relief and Development (CONCORD), the European Network of Foundations for Democracy Support, the European Network of Independent Political Foundations in Democracy Promotion and Development Cooperation or the Human Rights and Democracy Network. NGOs have continuously asked the EU and its Member States to step up and engage more in the fight for the promotion of universal human rights.
