The European Council brings together the 28 Heads of State or Government of the Member States and discusses the main direction the EU should take in the future. Therefore the European Council defines the EU’s overall political direction and priorities. Also the overall direction of the EU’s energy policy is shaped by the European Council whereas concrete policy proposals are initiated by the European Commission.
Current president of the European Council is Donald Tusk from Poland. His term as president is from 1 December 2014 until 31 May 2017.
